Cape May, is a city at the southern tip of Cape May Peninsula in Cape May County, New Jersey, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The town's history dates back to its founding in 1620 by a Dutch captain named Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. Cape May claims to be the oldest seaside resort in the United States (The city's official motto is "The Nation's Oldest Seashore Resort"); it first became popular in the 18th century and was considered one of the finest resorts in America by the 19th century. It is noted for its large number of well-maintained Victorian houses - the second largest collection of Victorian-era homes in the nation after San Francisco. In 1976, it was officially designated a National Historic Landmark city. That designation is intended to ensure the architectural preservation of these buildings.
